Excerpt:
Davies has created a new map of the world by mashing up airport data and a spherical Voroni diagram that creates new borders by finding the exact midpoint between any two airports. Borders set by treaties, rivers, and mountains are replaced with new lines driven purely by math. The result is a view of the world that looks more like a cellular diagram or mosaic than a map.
Airports are offering more conveniences that one would associate with a mall, such as hair salons and medical clinics, according to this article from the NY Times. After an airport mention, I've added a link to the respective Air Wear products.
The Multipurpose Airport
By MICHAEL T. LUONGO

Jim Rosenberg, the head of online and social media for the World Bank, can vouch that some airports offer a lot more than places to eat and newsstands filled with gossipy magazines.
On a flight from Washington to Tbilisi, Georgia, Mr. Rosenberg realized during a stop in Munich (Munich travel souvenirs) that he "didn't have this asthma medicine I take every day," he said. But, luckily, the airport had a pharmacy. "I knew the generic name to tell them what I needed," he said. "They told me I had to go to the clinic for a prescription. It was just down the hall."
Mr. Rosenberg said he was surprised at how easy it was. "The most this all cost me was mainly time and money from being disorganized."

Even the most efficient business travelers may find themselves forgetting something or running out of time to take care of a personal errand before a flight. Airports, particularly those in Europe and Asia, are responding by offering an increasing array of services like hair salons, medical clinics and dry cleaners.
Rainer Perry, the United States representative for Düsseldorf International Airport (Dusseldorf travel souvenirs), said that "the city is known for trade shows and conventions, so we get a lot of business travelers." The airport's advantage, Mr. Perry said, is its small size, with all services "in one terminal building, so no long distances." He said the services included meeting rooms, pharmacies, a hairdresser, a post office and an airport dentist, open even on Sundays and holidays, allowing travelers to schedule visits or have emergency dental work between connections.

Wilko W. Geesink, a pharmacist, is the managing director of Apotheek Schiphol Plaza, the pharmacy inside Arrivals Hall 3 in Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam travel souvenirs), which opened in 2009. Mr. Geesink said his clients included "locals, people working at Schiphol Airport or living nearby, commuters, travelers, hospitals from abroad, oil platforms, you name it."

The Berlin-Brandenburg airport is delayed again, but Air Wear shipments are running on-time. ;)

Excerpt from the NY Times:

The new airport, the Berlin-Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport, was originally scheduled to open in 2011, then June 2012. The deadline was then pushed back to March, and then to October. It is to replace two older airports — Tegel in the west and Schönefeld in the east — which were strained beyond capacity as the reunified city established itself as a tourist destination. Last year about 25 million visitors passed through Berlin. The new airport is supposed to be able handle up to 27 million passengers a year.

The delays in the project — the latest caused by a faulty fire safety system — have dented Germany's shiny image as an efficient industrial powerhouse driven by superior technical know-how and have become the butt of jokes among Berlin residents.

Air Wear products include a bar code design theme. I was saddened to learn that the co-founder of the barcode died this week. Joseph Woodland was schooled in morse code, and had been trying to track product using that...until one day at the beach...

The inventors originally intended the bar code to be round.

The excerpt from the Wall St. Journal article on Mr. Woodland's passing is below.
(The NY Times also offers a nice write up on Mr. Woodland's death here.)

The only code Mr. Woodland knew was the Morse Code he had learned in the Boy Scouts, his daughter said. One day, he drew Morse dots and dashes as he sat on the beach and absent-mindedly left his fingers in the sand where they traced a series of parallel lines.

"It was a moment of inspiration. He said, 'instead of dots and dashes I can have thick and thin bars,' " Susan Woodland said.

Today's New York Times gives us an update on the airline transportion hubs being upgraded. Excerpt from Jan Mouawad's article:

Los Angeles International Airport's (view Los Angeles products) plans for a $1.5 billion international terminal will add 18 gates.
New York's three major airports (view New York products), as well as the airports in Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta (view Atlanta products) and Chicago (view Chicago products), are spending billions of dollars. Many of the airports have aging terminals, some built in the 1960s and 1970s, that are ill suited to the bigger planes, bigger security lanes and bigger crowds of modern-day air travel. They are replacing or improving existing terminals, updating food concessions and parking garages, or adding runways to keep up with growing demand.

These investments are concentrated at the largest international gateways, where the growth of foreign travel has been fastest. Unlike international hub airports overseas, like Changi Airport in Singapore (view Singapore products), Hong Kong International Airport (view Hong Kong products) or Frankfurt Airport (view Frankfurt products), which consistently fare well in traveler surveys, airports in the United States receive low marks for customer service with more delays, more congestion and older amenities. Skytrax, a British consulting firm, found recently that six of the 10 best airports this year were in Asia, three in Europe, and one in Canada.
London may build a new airport (and close Heathrow). We hope they'll share some Air Wear. We also wonder what the new airport's code may be? Thames Estuary Airport...Does England seem ready for TEA?

Excerpt from today's New York Times:

At the crux of the airport debate is Heathrow, Britain's main international air hub, located to the west of the capital and, with more than 69 million passengers a year, the third-largest airport in the world, after Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta and Beijing Capital International.

While it still serves significantly more passengers than any other airport in Europe, Heathrow, which has just two runways, has been operating at almost 100 percent capacity for a decade and been constrained from growing further by government indecision over whether to build a third runway.
